A Program To Help Gain Weight

So you are looking for something to help gain weight. You've thought it through, and you've come to the conclusion that this is a step you want to take. Now where do you go? Do you turn to those that say it's a matter of genetics, or those that live in the gym? Where do you go from here to help gain weight?

They will tell you that it's all in the genetics; they will tell you that you don't have the drive or motivation to do what it takes. In an effort to help gain weight, we often look to "them"-the bodybuilders that we admire. However, the bodybuilding industry often places demanding, unrealistic, often unhealthy expectations on today's men. It is possible to have the body that you want without all the hype and unhealthy practices.

The truth is that only minor adjustments are needed to help you gain weight.

Your body will gain muscle at an astonishing rate if you adhere to a sensible diet and exercise routine.

The first and most important adjustment, is you MUST EAT MORE!

Begin by taking in more calories. That seems simple enough, but can be a bit more difficult to put into practice. Just as with weight loss, small additions or deletions to your diet can help you gain weight.

Spread six small meals throughout the day instead of concentrating on three larger meals. Increasing the amount of proteins and fats will help gain weight.

There are supplements such as whey protein or meal replacement powders that can assist you. Of course, the next step is to work out: exercise will help to build muscle mass, while offsetting the additional calories that you taking in.

Your quest to help gain weight may take you down many avenues. Just remember to be sensible. That, and a little work, will have you on the track you seek!

Spring Color In The Landscape

Most people enjoy color in the landscape, but especially in the Spring after the Winter season.

In the early Spring, one can enjoy blooming bulbs, which should be planted the previous Fall. Some bulbs to plant might be Daffodils, Tulips, Grape Hyacinth and Hyacinth. There are others, but these are some of the more spectacular ones. I like to plant ALOT of one kind together to create an eye-catching splash of color.

Daffodils come in various colors, but mainly yellows, oranges and whites. They can also be single, double, or even ruffled. Daffodils can naturalize, which means they multiply as years go by. They are also deer resistant.

Tulips also come in many colors, more so than Daffodils. You can choose shades of pink, purple, white, and yellow. These are the most common colors. The flowers themselves can be on the small side or very large, and they can also be ruffled. Deer love tulips, so be careful where you plant them if you have a deer problem.

I love Grape Hyacinths. They are very small and come in purple and white. Due to their size, an abundance of them should be planted together in groups to make a statement and have them stand out.

Hyacinths are a larger from of the Grape Hyacinth and also come in various colors. They are shorter and wider, rather than the tall and slender forms of the Daffodils and Tulips.

Early flowering trees are always a welcoming sight in the spring. Some of these are Cherry trees, Dogwoods, Crabapples, Magnolias, and Flowering Plum. Certain varieties of trees are hardier than others. For example, Dogwoods have been plagued with Anthracnose. Crosses have been developed between the problematic native Flowering Dogwood and the Kousa Dogwood to create hybrids that are resistant to Anthracnose. One of the successful ones is the Stellar Pink Dogwood. As its name implies, the flowers are a beautiful pink.

There are a multitude of flowering shrubs to choose from that will provide color in the spring. Some that you might consider are Rhododendron, Azaleas, and Viburnum. Most of theses varieties do well located in an area that gets both sun and shade. Rhododendron are large leaved shrubs and graceful. Most are on the larger size, but not all. A smaller Rhododendron variety is "Janet Blair" and has very pretty clear pink flowers. Rhodendron flowers can also be other shades of pink, purples, reds and white. The deer do like to eat this plant. However, the native Rhododendron is somewhat deer resistant. Azaleas come in many colors. You can find them in white, pinks, purples, and reds. The Exbury Azalea, which is larger and deciduous, comes in much brighter colors. So if you like bright yellows and oranges, you might try one of these. Viburnum flowers are mostly white. The majority of these plants get large and they are mostly deer resistant. They look nice in a relatively shady location and also work well in natural or wooded areas. Japanese Andromeda and Mountain Laurel are also lovely, early flowering shrubs. There are many varieties of these so you may select for particular colors and also shrub size. As you drive or walk around in the spring, you might see masses of Mountain Laurel blooming in the woods or at the edges.

Spring blooming perennials can be found in numerous sizes, shapes and flower colors. Bleeding Heart 'Exima' or 'Luxuriant' will bloom on and off for a good part of the season. Pink is the most common although they are also available in white. They like the shade. Peonies are a lovely old-fashioned perennial with their large beautiful flowers. They resemble a medium sized shrub (although they are a perennial) so can be used where you need some substance. Veronica with its spike-like blooms is very colorful. This is a lower perennial that prefers a sunny condition. Another great perennial is Catmint 'Walker's Low'. I have this in my garden. Mine is now two years old. It is about three feet wide and about 18' - 24" high. It blooms for an extremely long time with purple elongated flowers. Here is a tip for this plant. When flowers are finishing, cut the plant and flowers back by about 12". It will re-bloom again and be just as pretty.

Try to plant in large groups to maximize the impact of the color. One Daffodil looks lonely, but 100 make a striking picture. The same holds true for shrubs and perennials; you should plant them in groups. I like to use a minimum of five of a particular plant all in the same color. Trees can be used alone, but even with this type of plant you can add a few of one kind. A group of three Dogwood in bloom provides a mass of color.

Think in color schemes for plants that bloom at the same time. One palette might be various shades of pink, while another could be pinks, purples and whites. Want more of a cottage garden look? Add some pale yellows to create a soft kaleidoscope of color.

Select plants that bloom in different Spring months, from March through May. Then you are onto Summer color!

Features of a Good Design

Text

Text is big enough to read. Background does not interrupt the text. The content is clear. You need to identify what you want to achieve with your website.

Navigation

Your website should be easy to navigate. Every page should be consistent and easy to understand links back to other pages. It should give visitors context and help them to find quickly what they are looking for on a website. Without proper navigation a website becomes just a jumble of content. Navigation is even more critical for large websites: in fact, without proper navigation, the larger the website, the less usable it will become. Navigation design is thus a critical function that must be carefully planned and implemented.

Navigation buttons and bars are easy to understand and use. Navigation is consistent throughout the web site. Navigation buttons and bars provide the visitor with a clue as to where they are, what page of the site they are currently on.

Graphics and designs

True images, animations and designs are one of the important elements because somehow this makes a site more fun and less boring. But excessive use of this elements would just make your visitor get irritated so limit your animations and images because content and clear identified goal still matters.

Buttons are not too big.

Every graphic link has a matching text link. Graphics and backgrounds use browser-safe colors. Pages download quickly.Good use of graphic elements (photos, subheads, pull quotes) to break up large areas of text.

Links

Link colors coordinate with page colors. Links are underlined so they are instantly clear to the visitor. Appearance is not the most important issue. Its accessibility, usability & search engine visibility is more important. If possible, consider doing a couple of other things like, making web pages on the Internet fully accessible and usable to all users, especially those with disabilities, speed up your website, make it easy for prospective customers to find what they are looking for, make your web design easy to navigate.

Bad Credit Business Loan Forward Your Business Interests Without Credit Worries

You as an established business person or as a new entrance in business do always require funds. Own sources are either insufficient or despite having the finance you prefer to save it for other expenses and opt for a loan instead. But there is one huge hurdle--your bad credit. You fear that lenders will deny a loan or put hard conditions which will take loan availing beyond your reach. Well, such impediments will no longer worry you. Bad credit business loan has been especially tailored for making a loan offer more convenient for bad credit people.

Taking bad credit business loan is a very simple and hassle free process. You can not do much about your bad credit. There are however some effective ways of offsetting bad credit factor. But first know your credit score. Bad credit happens because there have been repeated payment defaults from the borrower and as a consequence had to face CCJs or filed for bankruptcy. This gets reflected in credit score. On FICO scale of 300 to 850, credit score below 600 is labeled as bad credit. A slight improvement can be achieved in credit score if some easy debts are paid off. This at least will assure the lender of your intentions in paying off the loan.

Bad credit is of no major concern to the lender in case collateral is placed with lender. Collateral may consist of any property of borrower like home or vehicle. This secured bad credit business loan does not require any extensive credit check as the loan is well secured. Lender knows that in case of a payment default, he can recover loaned amount back on selling the borrowers property. Secured bad credit business loan enables in taking greater loan of 50000 to 1000000. You pay a lower interest on the secured loan. Compare different loan offer and the interest rates go further down than the average rate. The secured loan can be repaid in 5 to 30 years, sufficient time for regaining financial health.

Never worry even if you do not want to risk a property for a loan. Take unsecured bad credit business loan. No collateral is required for the loan. All you do is make a convincing repayment plan to assure the lender that you are serious towards paying off the loan. However the unsecured loan has this higher interest rate, smaller loan and shorter repayment duration attached to it. But it should not bother you as since you opt for the unsecured option, your need may be a smaller loan which can be paid in few years and higher interest rate will not be a burden.

Before settling for the deal, compare different loan offers on the internet. Apply online to the lender having suitable package. After verification of the details the loan approval will come soon.

Make sure that you pay off the installments in time. This will not only keep you away from debts but will improve credit score also. Consider every aspect of the loan before making a deal with lender.

A Professional Approach to Cold Calling

My boss was screaming, Theyve got your money! Are you gonna let them take your money? Grab them through the phone and ring their necks till they give you your money!

The required response was any sort of scream or violent flailing. I left the office and never went back. Of the three days I had been selling marketing services to auto dealers, I was already on top of the board. But the work environment was miserable.

A cold calling environment on any level must be disciplined. But yelling and banging gongs and ringing bells and over the shoulder direction during calls fosters an attitude that is less than professional. And how can you attract professionals to work in that kind of environment?

There are three simple actions an outbound cold call manager can take to keep production high while building a professional team:

1. Provide each caller their own space. This means a relatively sizable space with significant room between callers. The sound quality will be much better (great for the prospects perception) and your caller will feel more comfortable.

2. Limit surveillance to numbers. This applies to established callers beyond a training period. On a day to day accounting of the callers production, let the numbers speak for themselves. Only interfere when the numbers take a drastic or sustained decline.

3. Provide call support on a non TO (turn over) basis. TO is when a caller has a good prospect on the line, puts them on hold and then a manager picks up to close or spike the call. Dont do it! Have your initial caller establish a follow through based on commitment. Have the prospect commit to a second separate call, at a specific date and time, either with themselves or with the manager.

While these simple actions may seem counter intuitive, they work well over time. Follow these directions and you will decrease costly employment turnover. A team sense will then grow. Reinforce pride in your team by treating them as the professionals they are.

Good Luck.

New Laptop Insurance and Computer Insurance: Does This Protect You?

Laptop Insurance in now recognised as necessary, because most people recognise the risk of a high value laptop that they carry around. Computer Insurance is slightly less obvious in terms of travel risk, but a computer is similarly a high value item at risk from damage and theft.

Laptop insurance has historically covered mostly business customers. Now a new laptop protection and computer protection has just been released, particularly for those who don't want to sign up to a long term contract.

This can be found at http://www.2u.co.uk/laptop-insurance/

This is specifically designed to protect people who know their laptop or computer has high value but do not want to make a long term commitment. Instead people can protect their laptop or computer on a month by month basis.

Naturally, the value of a laptop or computer declines with age, and the cost of replacement tends to decline with time. So many people do not want to sign up for a long term contract. With this in mind, the latest laptop insurance and computer insurance policies have been developed, such as the 2U Laptop Insurance and 2U Computer Insurance policies.

A Guide To Choosing A University Course

University courses and degree programs take around four years of study to complete. Nevertheless, some students may need more time to complete the university course. It is also possible to shorten the university courses by studying in the intersession of spring and summer.

An average student has to spend three hours of study for every hour spent in class. Fifteen hours per week is the average time for a university course. Depending upon the university courses subject, classes may be held during the evening, afternoon or in the day. To support the academic university courses, they may also have to attend the clubs, athletics, recreational activities and societies.

The overall requirement for the degree along with the degree elements will be explained to the students by the faculty advisor. The advisor should be kept informed if the student has any specific area of interest or careers in mind while selecting the university courses. The university courses can be chosen by the students based on their degree requirements, schedules and their interests.

During the transition to the university course, there will be a peer mentor or an upper class student studying in the same degree program to assist the first year students undergoing the university course.

Study skills are enhanced by free workshops conducted through out the year. By appointment and during the regular hours of office, the professors will also assist the students to overcome any problems faced by them during their university course period. For specific classes, tutorials and labs facilities will also be available for the students. In case of difficulties, the students studying a university course are encouraged to contact professors, faculty advisors or counselors to overcome their problems.

The cost of university courses depends upon the area of study and the lifestyle of the student. The technology fee, student fees and tuition fee are standard and must be paid by the students.

Each university course focuses on its studies. To cite an example, languages, politics, history, psychology are people oriented university courses in the Bachelor of Arts program. Where as the university courses under Bachelor of Science programs such as statistics, mathematics or biology are not people oriented.

Within a university course, in the degree program, a major should be chosen by the students. Within the overall degree, this is a specific study area. The majority of the courses will be related to the specific discipline when a major subject is chosen by the student. A student selecting history as his major in his university course will be studying more history related material than any other areas of study within that course.

Whilst selecting the university courses, try to find out the courses disliked during high school and concentrate more on the courses liked. To find more about the interesting university courses, make an appointment with the liaison officer for a discussion. Take a tour of the universities and colleges to find out more about the courses available.

Real Estate Asset Protection

The goals of Real Estate Asset Protection are:

Keep the ownership of the real estate anonymous. Anonymous Panama Corporations and Anonymous Panama Foundations do this extremely well; in fact better than any other jurisdiction we are aware of. Anonymous ownership of real estate reduces your profile as a target for lawsuits and collection attorneys can not go after something they do not know even exists.

If a structure of Anonymity is not practical the next best solution is to take away the attachable equity through the use of lawful mortgages and other encumbrances filed on the property locally by anonymous Panama Corporations or Foundations.

You should only use a Law Firm for asset protection so you have attorney client privilege. The law firm used should be out of the reach of the court where the real estate is located. If a lawyer in your country forms an offshore structure for you what are you going to do when he winds up in the lawsuit with you - defrauding creditors would be one possible allegation, or if he has the judge order him to open up his records concerning you. If you felt the courts, laws, judges, lawyers etc. in your country were fair and equitable you wouldnt be reading this. Dont make the mistake of using a law firm in another country which also has flawed privacy laws. The courts in his country will probably cooperate with the courts in your country.

As a last resort but still a valuable one the asset protection structure should present itself to your pursuing financial adversaries as so burdensome, onerous, confusing, time consuming and expensive that they will accept a settlement from you for a mere fraction of the debt in question. This is an often overlooked positive outcome that lets you keep your property and settle the debts for pennies on the dollar, sort of a bankruptcy without going bankrupt.

Detailed Information Follows:

Today many people in different countries are very worried about their real estate being lost due to court actions leaving them homeless or without their real estate portfolio. Real estate is not portable and unfortunately is one of the first things aggressive collection attorneys go after. Since the ownership of real estate in many jurisdictions is open and transparent, the real estate ownership rolls are often used to determine if a person has enough wealth to go after in a civil lawsuit, in other words it flags you as a target. Real estate ownership records are also used to accomplish identity theft since a lot can be learned about the owner from the public records like when the mortgages were taken out, from which company and for how much, the full names and addresses of the owners, etc. This information is then used combined with other public databases like drivers licenses, phone and utility records etc. to create a profile of the victim which is used to steal their identity. Lack of privacy is invasive and also encourages litigation and criminal activity.

So how do you protect your real estate in as anonymous manner as possible? Some sample strategies are briefly described below.

Mortgages:

One real estate asset protection strategy is to borrow against the real estate using mortgages or trust deeds. Typically in most jurisdictions the borrowed money is not taxable as income since it must be repaid. Usually one can borrow up to 80% of the value of the house. Collection attorneys will not spend money to go after a house with 20% or less available equity. This is also true concerning government collection agencies. It is felt that auctions in the courtroom or on the steps of the courthouse will not bring in more than 80% of the appraised value since these auction buyers are looking for a substantial discount. One important point to be considered is the collection attorney may want to know where the borrowed money from the mortgage is to see if it is within his reach like in the country concerned. If the money is offshore they rarely will pursue it. They are not lawyers outside of their country and must retain local lawyers who usually smell deep pockets and charge high fees for this type of service which will rarely ever has a happy ending for them. The country where the money is may be hostile to such collection actions as is very often the case and makes it hard for these cases to be pursued. These countries often dismiss these cases for lack of venue or jurisdiction. Also the collection attorney from your country often has to post a cash bond to cover court costs if they lose which again deters such actions. The potential problem with the above scenario is now you have a mortgage on property that may have been free and clear. You need to go through a credit check and reveal personal information much of it will wind up in public or semi-public databases like credit agencies databases. Now you have to make the payments and pay the interest rates. There are usually penalties involved if you terminate the lease early. Many of these loans have variable interest rates which can go up and now you have a blood sucking Mortgage Company on your property title. There is a better way.

Your own Mortgage Company:

There is nothing wrong with borrowing money from an anonymous Panama Bearer Share Corporation that to protect its interests places a mortgage on your property. You basically write a mortgage through your corporation to yourself to record on the title of the property you wish to protect. This requires a lawyer in the city where the real estate is to advise you as to how the mechanics and local laws will work when recording your mortgage and pertaining to it. You may need to fund an escrow in the area where the real estate is in some countries to validate the mortgage, but there are work arounds for this as well. After the escrow closes the loan is recorded against the property tying up the equity in the property reducing your profile as a target greatly. You could make the loan at more than 80% of the value like 99% if you so desired. The corporation or an additional corporation could be used to make a second or even a third mortgage. Of course your borrowed money is not taxable and but you do need to make payments with interest to your own corporation. This is a real loan. If one researches you or your real estate they will see encumbered real estate and someone thinking of suing you may think you are not worth the time and expense which is one of our goals. If someone does try to levy or auction your real property they will have to pay the mortgage off from any auction or sale proceeds and if the amount of the mortgage (LTV- Loan to Value) is at least 80% of the appraised value a sale for enough money to pay off the mortgage will be extremely unlikely thus they will not bother spending the legal fees and auction fees. Auction buyers are price buyers, not people looking for a certain home in a certain school district etc. Remember the Panama Corporation owning the mortgage has no listed owner anywhere so it is impossible for ownership to be looked up by a potential financial enemy sizing you up. In any event the obstacle of the mortgage makes normal collection actions immensely more difficult for them if they should try to pierce through the corporate veil. Panama corporate veils do not pierce. They do not know this is your mortgage and that you own the corporation that wrote the mortgage and the only way of finding out would be to take your deposition and ask you. Well for all they know you dont own the corporation, perhaps you did and transferred the ownership, or they might assume you would lie and they could not catch you in your deception, or they may assume it is owned by a friend or relative or whatever else comes into their mind. You are not responsible for their thoughts; this is something they do all on their own. One thing to be perfectly clear on is now collection costs for your financial adversary has now gone up, way up and the person going after your assets has some decisions to make as to how much money they want to spend. The collection attorney is going to be anything but encouraging because he is now in an environment that he does not understand welcome to the jurisdiction of Panama Counselor. He is going to tell your financial enemy that more money is required to pursue this, in the back of his mind not really wanting to pursue this and if he does have to do it he is going to want to get paid big time. When lawyers do not want to do something they charge a lot. Now if the attorney gets into it and finds out the corporation ownership is non-transparent and soon discovers that Panama has tight bank secrecy etc. he will become more frustrated and this means higher fees for your financial enemy. What will the other side do if a Panama Private Interest Foundation owns the Corporation and you can legally say you do not own the Corporation? Panama Foundations really have no owner so you could also say you do not own the Foundation. Welcome to Panama Mr. Collection Attorney. You are not responsible for providing the other side ownership details of a foundation or corporation that is their problem. You can say you do not own the corporation or foundation and that is where it stops as far as you are concerned. Folks when they see a Panama Corporation or a Panama Foundation on the mortgage they are more than likely to drop it right there because they know they are spinning their wheels and will more than likely never get anywhere and spend a ton of money getting nowhere. Remember the collection attorney doesnt deal with Panama Asset Protection scenarios everyday, or even every decade for most of them. He will see things as a brick wall, blind alley, etc and not know what to do. Remember the attorney that is doing the collection can be sued by his client for frivolously spending his clients money and running up a big bill when chances for a positive return are most unlikely.

Line of Credit Mortgage:

There are other ways of protecting real estate assets where no actual funding of a mortgage is required. A line of credit is set up through a Panama Financial Institution that records a trust deed based on the size of the line of credit. This is very similar to what finance companies in the USA do with home equity lines of credit. This also requires you to retain a local attorney in the area where the real estate is located to ensure that proper papers are filed with the local government registry. The line of credit need not be drawn down upon, yet it can still be used to protect your real estate equity, or boat equity, car equity, airplane equity, art collection equity etc. The line of credit can be cancelled at any time by you and within 30 days the mortgage on the property will be released. There are safeguards put in place to ensure you have control over this.

A Profitable Web 2.0 Project Developed In 24 Hours?

It took seven months to get the One Million Masterpiece charity project online. The site is complex and needed the development time, but in the last few days Ive had a yearning to see if I can still turn around a project in 24 hours. Back in the early days of the Internet boom Id sit in my bedroom and knock out html websites all night long, but almost ten years on, can it still be done in a time where profitability and interactivity are the key measures?

So, its 7am and Ive got a plan. The new pressures I face in life (work responsibilities, family etc) have been dealt with and I have a clear 24 hours ahead of me. An idea for a site has been kicking round in my head ever since I sold a site last year. This site was a very specialist software comparison site that generated referral commissions and Adsense income. It was an excellent earner and Ive wanted to recreate that success, but on a larger scale.

So last year I bought the domain http://www.shoutdown.net with the intention of building a software comparison style project. I want the site to be in the informal blog style, where the posts are product summaries (written by me), and the comments would be reviews submitted by other people. Id also throw in a rating system, and way of attaching news releases or other relevant pages to each product post, plus link related posts (for example different versions of the same software).

So the idea is there, its 7:30am and my first job is to select some mp3s to get me through to lunch. Here goes

08.00
By the time Ive chosen my music, switched off my Google desktop bar and responded to essential email its already 8am crap. So, first job is drawing out a schematic of the database that will power my site. What information do I want to keep and how will I organise it? Im having five database tables. For ease Im calling them level1, level2, level3 etc because I see them as levels of information about each software product the top being category information and the bottom being the reviews and ratings.

09:15
Took me quite a while to get the structure clear, but now Im sketching out the homepage on paper. Ive looked at a few blogs that I like and have basically copied their layout for ease. Ive also worked out the sizing of my main columns and rows and know the positions of the adverts, main blog posts and navigation. I still like to work on paper at this stage Im an artist at heart!

09:55
OK lets get on the computer. Ive fired up Paint Shop Pro and my first job is to work out a colour pallet. I want three colours, so I blob different combinations on a blank white image until I get the right combination orange, purple and grey. I then make a note of the hex codes for each colour on a post-it this will save LOADS of time later. While Im in PSP Im going to mock up a logo as I already know the size of image I need from my plan. Actually I really like the logo so it will probably be permanent.

10:21
Time to start on the site. Im using a single html page at the moment with a linked css file. Using some basic tables and css Ive laid out the top bar, the post area and two columns (one for ads and one for navigation). Im sticking to a tried and tested blog layout.

I always use Dreamweaver, but always hand code. Why use Dreamweaver then? Well, I find the preview quite accurate, but other than that I have no idea just habit.

11:38
Ive just finished the main site layout, including place holding text that will eventually be dynamic. Ive left space for some ads on the site, so Ive justed logged in to Adsense to generate the code. All I need to do is use the colours on my post-it to get them fitting in nicely. Ill also take a look round for some other nice banners in my affiliate accounts.

12:43
That took longer than planned, time for lunch

13:17
OK time to fill up my database with some data, then I can start writing the php that will populate the pages. Im going to sign up for a few software affiliate accounts and write some sample reviews on the software. At the moment I havent got time to write really good reviews, but in time I intend to fully try each title and write some good stuff (positive and negative). For now Ill be brief.

15:20
Right, lets get back to the site. Im going to sort out the navigation side bars first, and then Ill split my single page up.

16:45
This isnt working. Ive got a very limited knowledge of php so Im having trouble dynamically generating category headings and software lists dynamically. Its taking too long to sort out so for now Im going to simply print a list of all software titles in the database. Ill make up for it by also providing a list of software categories, plus a list of the most reviewed software.

16:58
Im going to split up my single html page now into a header, body, nav and footer, and use a php include to pull the pages together. In total I will only need three main template pages for the content of this site the homepage, a category page and a product page.

18:24
Ive finished the layout of the three pages, including all the code that pulls info from the database. Everythings working pretty well and Im please with the simplicity. My next job is to create an rss feed of the posts and reviews, but first I need some DINNER!

20:04
After some pasta and tv Im ready for this rss feed. Its pretty easy to create a php page that will pull the necessary code and place it in the rss 2.0 layout. Once Im done Ill just save the php file as xml and ensure that my .htaccess file remembers to parse xml files for php code.

21:36
I checked that the rss feed was valid using a standard validator. It took a little time to sort out the date formatting to be honest.

21:57
Ive been developing using Firefox to test the layout, but I just checked the site in IE and noticed the background colour was dodgy. It was a css error fixed.

22:15
OK back to content. The reviews at the moment are boring so Im going to add some images and expand them a little. Im also going to add some reviews that Ive been collecting over the last few months. The good thing about buying the domain and posting up a test website for six months is that the search engines have already crawled the site, and hopefully will help me avoid the Google sandbox.

02:30
Im absolutely knackered. Ive just spent the last few hours trying to get the navigation system working but with no luck. The problem is that Im trying to dynamically generate an information tree (apparently thats what its called after much research) but I just cant get it working. Im giving up.

04:49
OK, Ive just created a rating system which will only accept one software vote per IP address. Seems a bit buggy but I really really tired and cant be bothered to go through it again now.

So whats left to do? I need to create forms to input reviews, news and bookmarks but Im just too tired to continue. So much for 24 hours, but actually Im really pleased with the result. On the surface the site looks like any other blog, and you might question why I decided to hand code the entire thing. Well, I have some ideas for some advanced functions, but Ill only be able to implement them if I know the site inside out. Plus I just like the challenge.

I wont have time to work on the site all week, but Im already planning my next 24 hour session marketing. Ill be sure to keep you updated on that, and how the site is doing generally!

Goodfinding Issue One: Ways to Build Your Health and Happiness Now

There is more good news available all of the time. Check out goodnewsbroadcast.com, happynews.com and goodfinding.com for examples. There is a growing awareness of the toxic effects of negative news, and some good folks are doing something about it. Be prepared, however. Good news won't get your heart pumping, or create a sense of urgency. Be prepared to be peaceful. Be willing to face the risk of relaxation. It will do you a lot of good. You were designed to be relaxed and peaceful. Check the diet of information you consume and how it affects your state of ease. Be an educated, discriminating consumer. Look for healthy, positive, uplifting, encouraging information that will digest well and provide the nutrients of relaxation, faith and optimism that you need.

Express your love and appreciation. Most of the love and appreciation in the world goes unexpressed. While this can be a source of pain, it can also be a basis for optimism and faith in humankind. For every word or act of love and appreciation expressed, consider that ten times more lies behind the walls of self-doubt and fear. Imagine that stored light and love lives inside everyone you meet, and picture this goodness flowing from one person to another, like arcs of appreciation silently connecting us into a web of loving unity. And express your love. It is good for your heart, and it raises the value of your relationships. Recognize the things, people and places you appreciate, write it down and talk about it. Start an appreciation revolution.

Stay awake. To stay awake and vibrantly healthy, start something new. Be creative and do something you've never done before. It will help your brain and body work better, and it will activate your beginner's mind. Write a poem, paint a picture, study a language or learn a new dance. As a beginner, you stand on the threshold of mystery, balanced between fear and excitement, challenge and opportunity. On this edge, this precipice that marks the boundary between the familiar and the unknown, you are alive and stepping forward into the abyss of your undiscovered self. Stretch yourself, and find out who this is inside you, longing to express the beauty and magnificence that is yours alone to offer. The world is waiting.

Practice the art of feeling good. Everybody wants to feel good. The desire to ease pain and create pleasure is the primary motivator of human behavior. So why don't more of us feel good more of the time? One reason is that it is natural to think we have to get the problems solved and the tasks completed before we can relax and have fun. That plan just won't work. There are too many problems, too many tasks. The art of feeling good and being happy must be learned and practiced regularly for its own sake. This is not selfish, it's practical. Taking care of yourself is merely filling your tank for your journey. The better you feel the more energy you will have to do those good works you so long to do. And the world wants you to do your good works.

Look for the nobility of the human spirit. As hard as it may be to find at times, the nobility of the human spirit is always there. Think of the courage of a mother facing childbirth, the grueling challenge students face in preparing for exams, the harsh conditions that soldiers, firemen, policemen, plumbers, teachers and surgeons face in doing their jobs. Remember the courage it took to go back to school when kids made fun of you the day before. Honor the determination and force of will it takes to create successful businesses, great music and works of art. Respect and acknowledge the brave hearts and good souls of human beings all around you trying to do the right thing and make the world a better place for all of us. You are one of these yourself.

Top 10 Website Mistakes

After being a website designer and user since 1996, I'm still seeing people make the same mistakes on their websites. Here's a list of the ones that will drive people away from your site and cause you to lose business (and your reputation as a professional business person).

1. 'Under construction' signs on your site. Websites are intended to be Living Documents. They are supposed to change and grow. Putting an 'under construction' sign on your website marks you as an amateur. If your site isn't ready to show to the public, don't publish it to a public location.

2. Visitor counters. Visitors generally don't care how many other people have visited your site. If the visitor counter shows a low number, that can be a psychological turn-off to people; if it's too high, people might believe that you've forged the number. Just take the visitor counter off your site. If you really need to know how many people have visited your website, check your statistics. (If your hosting company doesn't provide good statistics, get a new one!) Check out our article on how to choose a hosting company:

http://www.passionforbusiness.com/articles.htm

3. Lack of copyright statements. Everything you write, and your website design itself, is copyright-able. Make sure you include copyright statements on every page, and update the year in the copyright statement as appropriate. Nothing screams 'Not up-to-date' like having a copyright statement from 1997 on your site.

4. Overuse of technology. There are some really great, cool and wild techie things you can program into your website. But it they are going to distract the visitor from your message, or if they're going to slow down the loading of your page, ditch the extra technology in favor of simplicity. This includes large Flash shows, animated graphics and other large graphics, as well as scrolling text and audio that comes on as soon as the person hits your website.

5. Passive verbs. Use active verbs and active sentences when writing your site's copy. Active verbs are powerful and lend energy to your site. Need to brush up on using active verbs? Check out this site:
http://essayinfo.com/tips/active_verbs.php

6. Long sentences. When people read long sentences, they have to keep the first part of the sentence in their mind when reading the last part. People are easily distracted. Help your visitors by keeping your sentences short and crisp.

7. Long pages. Studies show that most people will not read a long page of text off of their computer monitor. They'll either print it or they'll scan it looking for major topics and bullet points. Keep your pages short. If you have a lot to say, consider creating a series of pages that explain your topic, with good navigation between each page.

8. Not identifying the benefits of your products or services. People make purchases for two reasons: to get rid of pain or to get pleasure. People want to know how your products and services will help them with their specific pain/pleasure situation. Instead of telling them that your widgets are made from steel and are 3 inches across, tell them that your widgets will stop their faucets from leaking for a lifetime.

9. Forgetting to ask the visitor to do something. In marketing, this is known as a Call To Action. Tell your visitors what you want them to do next. Sign up for my newsletter. Call me. Order today.

10. Believing in 'build it and they will come.' It might have worked in the movie Field Of Dreams, but in the reality of internet marketing it's: build it, MARKET it, and they will come. Once you've built your website you have to tell people about it. Think of your website the same way you'd think of a box of marketing brochures: if you don't get them into the hands of people, they're not worth the money you spent to create them.

Cincinnati Schools Creates Programs to Improve Teaching and Learning

Teacher Advancement Program

Three Cincinnati Schools have volunteered to take part in a new program next school year that is aimed to improve the schools instructional strategies and increase professional development. The aim of the program is to illustrate the connection between effective teaching and the students academic performance. The Cincinnati Schools involved in the pilot program are John P. Parker School in Madisonville, South Avondale School in Avondale and Whittier School in Price Hill. These schools cover kindergarten to eighth grade. These schools were chosen over other Cincinnati Schools due to each schools rankings within the federal No Child Left Behind Act and their potential for growth. The Teacher Advancement Program is a research based school reform program that is designed to retain the best teachers in the profession in the schools. The Teacher Advancement Program was created in 1999 by the Milken Family Foundation. A major goal of the Teacher Advancement Program is to reverse the tendency of gifted young teachers leaving schools for other work by turning teaching into a worthwhile career choice. Teacher Advancement Program is endorsed by the Ohio Department of Education as a new restructuring program and by Cincinnati Schools teachers union, the Cincinnati Federation of Teachers. Teacher Advancement Program focuses on four areas of teacher development and student achievement:

Ongoing, applied professional growth Teachers are given time each week during the school day to work with teachers in the same grades or subjects to match instructional practices to student needs.

Multiple career paths Each school offers mentors and master lead teachers to meet regularly with teachers to plan and reflect on instruction.

Instructionally focused accountability Teachers will focus on student data to improve instruction and on feedback from observations by the mentors, master teachers and principals.

Incentive pay Following negotiations with the CFT and CPS, incentive pay for teachers could be added for student achievement, professional growth and/or instructional growth.

Cincinnati Schools Set Five Year Plan

Cincinnati Schools have initiated a five year progress plan beginning this coming school year. The plan known as Building Futures: Every Student Every School Every Day has been recently approved by the Cincinnati Schools Education Broad. The plan aims to be students centered and sets high performance objectives. The plan wants to foster stronger links to families and community members with Cincinnati Schools and increase professional development among the teachers, staff and administrators. The plan also sets clear accountability measures. The plan was developed based on input from individuals and groups representing parents, community members, school staff, students, elected officials, business leaders, civil-rights organizations, faith-based associations, and others. This plan is divided into ten strategic areas. The plan sets improvement goals for all ten of these areas:

1. All pre K-12 students meet or exceed high academic standards.

2. All students graduate and are prepared for postsecondary education, successful careers and productive citizenship.

3. Schools have autonomy and effective governance, and are held accountable for results.

4. Schools are safe, supportive and family friendly.

5. The district supports schools and is accountable for results.

6. The district employs a highly qualified, diverse workforce that engages in continuous improvement through ongoing, high-quality professional development.

7. The district implements a systemic leadership development program.

8. State-of-the-art school facilities are designed to support student learning in a standards-based environment and are constructed meeting diversity-participation goals.

9. The district and schools are fiscally responsible and allocate resources equitably to support student learning.

10. Community partnerships strengthen the connection between schools and neighborhoods while supporting student learning and family engagement.

The Cool Thing About Fantasy Football

Everyone loves fantasy football and get very excited for the fantasy drafts. But, have you ever really thought about why? I mean, beyond the obvious.

Fantasy football is really the only place or way for you, an average person, to create a football team that you have control over. You choose which football player starts, and who is on the bench. You get to draft whatever players you want to your team based on their real life performance record. The really cool thing? Well, you don't have to worry about anything else. You don't have to deal with any money issues except for salary cap. That's it. You don't have to worry about how much money the fans are pulling in by purchasing tickets to your stadium, nor do you have to worry about purchasing the football equipment, such as football helmets like these: http://www.sports-collectibles-store.com/Riddell_Deluxe_Football_Helmets-p-1-c-3.html that your team will be using. Now, that my friends...is very cool indeed.

So you basically have free reign of a team of great football players (if you've done your homework), and now can decide who plays when. Obviously, it is not as in depth as Madden Football, but this is more of a player game. Meaning, you choose your players based on their record in the NFL and create your team and score your points that way instead of making plays, you are making a team.

Now, my question is: What about college football? The enormous fan base across the US would make fantasy college football a huge presence in the sports world. Sure, it would be a lot harder to predict what players to pick because although they are way better than I would ever be at football, they are not always as consistent as most NFL players are. Especially when you are drafting your defense. But, just imagine how much more varied and exciting the world of fantasy football would be if you could create your own college team too.

You could go off of the "experts" top college football picks, starting with the team and working your way down. Just think of the huge potential talent that is stuffed away at big 10 colleges because they've already got their star quarterback or wide receiver. This would give little known players a chance to get their name out there before even completing college. You could help them kick start their career!

Choosing Furniture For Your Dining Room

Although estate agents and property pundits keep telling us that the kitchen-diner is the place to be, theres still a lot to be said for a more formal dining area in your home. Many people who love the informality of a kitchen table also want to have somewhere special for family occasions, holiday meals or just to provide an additional eating space.

When youre choosing dining room furniture, you want to be sure that you are buying a table and chairs that will fit well into your room and give you the flexibility and space you need for those special meals. You want a table that will look great when its not in use, but is practical; able to sit a large number of people comfortably, wide enough to accommodate place settings and serving dishes and sturdy enough to withstand late-night dinner parties or raucous childrens teas.

Youll also need to think about how much you can spend on your furniture. A dining room table is a big purchase and an expensive one. Consider how often you will be using the room and what for make sure you choose a table that you can live with for many years, rather than one thats trendy this year but will be out of fashion by next Christmas.

There is a wide range of dining furniture available, and it pays to take the time to do some research. Browse the internet for ideas, or take a look at interior dcor magazines to see what sort of furniture appeals to you. Visit showrooms to check out prices and to try out the furniture for yourself. Theres nothing worse than spending a fortune on furniture only to discover that the chairs are uncomfortable or the extendable leaves dont work smoothly.

Buying furniture for your dining room needs to be an informed process, just like any other. Get it right, and you will have invested in a beautiful piece of furniture that will last a lifetime.

New Requirements for A+ Certification

CompTIAs A+ certification has long been recognized as the industry standard for vendor-neutral validation of entry-level computer hardware and software skills. As of July 2007, the certification examination requirements for A+ certification have been changed to reflect recent advances in technology and hiring practices.

Earning A+ certification still requires earning passing scores on two different exams. However, the content and structure of the required exams have changed.

Everyone will be required to successfully complete A+ Essentials (#220-601) exam, covering both hardware and software. In addition to the A+ Essentials exam, A+ candidates will be able to choose their second exam from a pool of elective tests specific to particular specializations.

Elective Tests:
* 220-602 IT Technician
* 220-603 Remote Support Technician
* 220-604 Depot Technician

The new A+ certification exam emphasizes the combination of technical know-how and other issues necessary for success in the IT field. Because employers are seeking well-rounded and skilled workers for their entry-level IT field, the new A+ examinations were designed, with feedback from subject matter experts, to cover the complete skill sets needed by those seeking entry-level employment in information technology.

In addition to knowledge specific to hardware and operating systems, the new A+ certification exams also look for knowledge in areas necessary for one to be a well-rounded computer professional. For example, concepts related to environmental issues, professionalism, communication skills, safety, and security are now included in the exam.

When you are ready to take the new A+ exam, it is a good idea to use a practice test to help you determine if you would benefit from completing a certification preparation course. There are a number of excellent online, instructor-led, and video-based training programs that can help you polish your skills and knowledge.

When you are ready to take your exam, be sure to check around for the best deals on exam vouchers and select a comfortable and convenient certification testing center that meets your needs.

Modern Art and the Compexities Involved

Modern art is typically thought to have started in the late 19th century and was a prominent form of art until the mid to late 20th century, typically understood to have ended around the 1970s. There are many different subgenres within the Modern art style, including Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, Surrealism, Cubism and Pop art, which can make it challenging to create a specific definition of the larger genre. A working definition of the form should include the ideas of the then new approach to art, which focused on emphasizing and representing emotions, themes and various abstractions in more or less nonrealistic ways, as is evident in the various subgenres.

One of the first categories within Modern art is Impressionism, which began to be exhibited publicly in the 1860s and included, most notably, Claude Monet. Some of the most distinct factors within Impressionist paintings were, first, that the artists took their work outdoors, outside of the commonly used studios and into the actual world, finding that they could capture the fleeting and temporary effects of sunlight by painting outdoors. Most artists of that time used their studios not only for portraits and still lifes, but landscape paintings as well. Secondly, one of the main distinguishing aspects of Impressionist paintings from other art forms was what gave the genre its name, that is that artists, instead of physically mixing the paints, such as red and blue to make purple on a pallet. Instead, the artists would leave the paints unmixed and place the colors side by side on the canvas, thus creating the impression of purple as the colors blend in the eye of the viewer.

Post-Impressionism was both an extension and rejection of its predecessor in that the artists continued to use vibrant colors, thick applications of paint, distinctive brushstrokes and real-life subject matter, but also rejected some of the more stringent limitations the former genre included. Arguably, the most famous artist within Post-Impressionism is Vincent Van Gogh, who used vivid color and vibrant swirling brush strokes to express his feelings and state of mind. Both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism sought to create realistic paintings of modern life that emphasized vivid overall effects rather than specific, realistic details.

Likewise, the Surrealism, Cubism and Pop art genres within Modern art focus less on representing the actual details and more on the overarching feelings, emotions, subtleties and commonalities between the actual image, and that found in the art. For example, surrealism, which is closely related to the dada movement, relied heavily on Sigmund Freuds ideas of free association and subsequently liberating the mind and imagination to create in a subconscious manner that abandoned strict form.

Similarly, Pablo Picasso, through Cubism, abandoned the strict realistic representation and broke images down into square blocks, representing the universal forms and commonality of everything. One of the fundamental ideas behind the cube was the ideological understanding of time as a cube. Whereas in most Western understandings of time are linear, with a past, a present event and a future, Cubists believed that an event was in the center of a cube. Two sides were the event's past and future; two more sides were one specific person's past and future as related to that event. The remaining sides connected all of these pasts and futures together, and these connections are what Cubist painters strove to capture in their paintings.

Repayment to Begin on Student Loans; NextStudent offers Options

For many recent college graduates the repayment period on their student loans is about to begin due to the end of the six-month grace period. As many graduates find their student loan payment booklets in their mailboxes, which typically arrive approximately 30 to 60 days before the first due date for payment, it is important for graduates to make their payments on time. Some graduates may be in a position to make the scheduled level repayment, while others will find themselves in a burdensome financial situation.

Phoenix-based NextStudent, the premier education funding company offers free advice and a variety of repayment options for students. Repaying student loans (http://www.nextstudent.com/student-loans/student-loans.asp) is serious business. However, there are various options depending on a graduates situation, most repayments are set to level repayment, unless otherwise noted.

Not every college graduate is settled into life after college, and not every graduate is employed. Some graduates still are searching for a job while others have moved home to save money. Life immediately after college can be a little stressful. There are so many things to get in order along with a new job, such as a place to live and a vehicle to get you where you need to go.

By contacting NextStudent after receipt of their payment booklet, graduates can speak to Education Finance Advisers and receive free guidance about the other available repayment plans. Income-sensitive and extended repayment plans are available by directly contacting the lender. With graduated repayment plans, graduates agree initially to pay lower payments. However, the payment amount increases every two years. This is a good choice for those graduates who feel or know that their salary will increase over time.

Forbearance is an option that graduates can use for any given reason. Graduates can use forbearance for up to three years. However, it is important to note that interest continues to accrue throughout the forbearance period.

There are those graduates who opt to defer their student loan payments. With deferment, student loan payments are postponed for a maximum of three years. While in deferment, interest will not accrue on subsidized loans. Graduates must show economic hardship to be eligible.

There are many available options for student loan repayment. NextStudent knows that when a grace period ends, it not always is the best time for graduates to repay their student loans. The Education Finance Advisers are there to help students and graduates with all the questions they may have regarding repayment and the options available to help make life easier and more manageable including student loan consolidation (http://www.nextstudent.com).

Barton G in South Beach

South Beach has many things: clubs, bars, snooty attitudes, beautiful people, over-priced drinks. One of the things that is most immediately noticeable about SoBe is also, ironically, one of the things that you first cease to notice once you have spent an appreciable amount of time there: the over-the-top, unbelievably garish, superficial glitz. This comes in many forms, from the icy blonde models that frequent clubs and hotspots to the ornate, often-extravagant dcor of the clubs and restaurants themselves - after youve been around it for a while, you barely notice it.

Thats why it is sometimes fun to go to a place where presentation is the specialty and wild culinary ideas are made real. Barton G (named for an eccentric impresario with a reputation for over-the-top theatrics) offers exceedingly original dishes that really have to be seen to be believed (for example, try the Freedom Chimp" for dessert its a chocolate monkey dressed as the statue of liberty, holding sparklers. No kidding). Even fairly standard dishes are presented in bizarre and interesting ways. For example, the seared scallops are served in lollipop form, while you can get swordfish and vegetables skewered on a foot-long dagger. The prices are a little steep, but unlike many other places in SoBe, the portions are huge, and the service is unfailingly excellent (though it does on occasion take a bit of time to be seated).

For optimal dining pleasure, try to get a seat in the garden it really has to be seen to be described, and remember to go all out on dessert. My favorite is the Baked Alaska, which is unrelentingly huge, and can easily feed four diners.

The next time you want to remember what South Beach is known for, head to Barton G its a culinary experience that you wont soon forget.

Dry Winter Skin: How to Deal with it

Feeling like a refrigerated raisin is often not the best way to enjoy the winter season and the joyous holidays that accompany it. Here are some tips on how to deal with dry winter skin.

Your skin in winter can become dry to the point of being painful. I myself began feeling the effects of the cooler weather in early October. My lips became tender and chapped, and I had to switch to a different formula of daily facial cleanser because the exfoliating beads in my current cleanser were irritating my skin. Ill have to limit my daily exfoliation to just twice a week. Also my hands and feet became very dry.

Indoors youre subjected to dry heat and outdoors youre bombarded with harsh winter UV rays from the sun and chilling winds. Yes, the suns rays are still just as dangerous as in summer and they will reflect off any snowy surfaces, bouncing the rays right back on to you. Youre going to need a good facial moisturizer with SPF in it.

Here are some more tips to help you combat dry winter skin:

Use a lip balm (preferably with SPF) and do not lick your lips under any circumstances. That just makes it worse. Keep your hands moisturized with a good quality hand cream.

Drink plenty of water and limit your alcohol intake. Alcohol is a dehydrator.

Buy a humidifier if you dont already have one. It may help keep your heating bills down as well. You know, the whole heat and humidity thing. Think Amazon rainforest.

Use a shower filter. It will filter out the skin-drying chlorine in your tap water. Avoid hot water even though it feels good on a cold winter morning. It will only strip your skin of its natural oils and cause water to evaporate more quickly. Also, it pays to switch from soap which can dry the skin, to a silky body wash which will help your skin retain moisture. Pat your skin dry when exiting the shower, dont rub. Apply a nice moisturizer to help seal in moisture.

When the humidity drops to 50 percent or less, you will need to pay even more attention to your moisturization routine. Stay away from harsh scrubs or cleansers since they will eliminate most of the skins oils and dry your skin out more easily. This applies to skin care products as well as cleaning products.

My favorite winter skin care tip is before you go to bed, apply a thick, rich moisturizer to your feet, concentrating on the heel area. Then put on a nice cushy pair of socks. When you wake up your feet will be soft and smooth and well-hydrated.

Not paying attention to extremely dry skin can lead to health issues and act as a welcome mat for rashes and skin infections. So take good care of your skin and enjoy your winter!

The Calm Before The Storm

If you consider all the ways in which companies have to run a business, it is no wonder legal support is so critical. Markets today are highly competitive. The internet has made global competition a reality that years ago we could not have even dreamed possible. With the increased opportunity also comes increased risk. Businesses must have the right information, at the right time to make strategic, operational, and tactical decisions about their business.

Although there are a number of areas within every company that need special attention, two of the most critical are finance and legal. Without surprise, these areas are also the source of potential business risk. Risk is a cost of doing business but for each risk event, a business will need to decide whether they will avoid it, mitigate it or transfer the risk. As it pertains to legal issues some risk issues can be handled within the company, while others will require the support of an attorney. In order to reduce or avoid risk, your attorney must not only be competent in their field but have a firm understanding of your strategic business objectives.

The role of risk in business received even greater attention with the events which led to the creation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The federal regulations around corporate governance coupled with the increase of white-collar crime such as identity theft, computer hacking, and embezzlement have made companies take risk management very seriously. Corporate compliance issues can become overwhelming and complex, which is why a reputable law firm is important. A law firm invested in your success can guide you through processes so you are able to efficiently assess and address risk issues.

As the amount of information we produce increases, data management and security also becomes more important. Your law firm can assist you with becoming better organized around data security issues, and hence implementing risk reduction measures. Data not only needs to be organized but securely stored with appropriate access controls. In response to this risk event, many corporations have began utilizing the services of internet data centers, which house the brain of the company in a secured, temperature controlled, clean, and monitored environment.

Financial risks are always a concern for companies, and can impact all facets of the organization operations, insurance, liabilities, etc. In addition to the traditional concerns of collecting, managing and presenting financial data, companies are also exposed to financial risks in business development. A business cannot grow without undertaking some amount of risk. For this reason risk cannot be managed in a silo by Legal, or Risk Management. An effective risk management plan will align with the overall strategic objectives of the business. Your inside and outside counsel must be partners in this process. While counsel will seek to institute the necessary protections against risk, they must also understand critical business objectives and help the organization to realize them.

Each company will have a risk profile based on their business goals and tolerance for risk. A companys risk aversion or acceptance will vary depending on a number of factors, including industry, size, competitive landscape and level of regulatory oversight. In example a financial institution may be much more risk averse than a printing company. For global organizations, the risks may also vary by location.

Risk management truly requires a partnership approach. Legal, Sales, Operation and The Executive Team must communicate and understand the critical business objectives and work together to make them happen. The legal team should understand not only how to identify risks in practices, operations, processes, technologies, and techniques but also how the risk fits with the overall business plan. Risks are inevitable, but with teamwork and skillful execution, you can successfully navigate the often choppy waters of doing business.

The Development of GPS

The Push for Development

The development of GPS came about out of necessity. As technology has advanced, GPS has also advanced to what we know it as today. We could not have a Global Position System without the advancement of rockets and satellites. Ironically we may owe a lot of this to the Soviet Union with them launching the first satellite and the cold war along with them shooting down civilian airliner KAL 007 in 1983 when it strayed in the Soviet Unions airspace. This pushed the United States to step up the pace to develop the Global Positioning System and for the first time is open to civilian use. Now GPS can be found in just about every facet of our lives, from driving navigation to outdoor uses, on job sites or in the mountains.

The Necessity

During WWII the military realized that they needed to find a better way to navigate than by the stars and weak or fading radio signals from radio towers. Many times when pilots were flying missions they would use radio signals to home in their home bases when they were returning home. This was fine if the pilot or navigator were near their planned return routes, but if they were off in their navigation to begin with they would have a hard time picking up the radio homing signal. They had to be within a given distance that was determined by the strength or power of the signal. In the early 1940s the LORAN system was in development for use for the military and used both on land and sea.

The First Big Break Through

When Sputnik was launched in 1957, a collection of United States scientists were monitoring its radio transmissions. They soon realized that Sputniks signal was higher on approach of the satellite and lower as the satellite had passed over and was moving away from them, because of Doppler Effect.

They theorized that if they knew what their fixed position was on the earth that they could figure out the exact position of the satellite by measuring the Doppler distortion or figuring where the satellite was in its orbit from their ground position.

The US Navy was the first to successfully test a satellite navigation system in 1960, it was known as Transit. This system was based on a constellation of five satellites orbiting the earth, in a geo synchronous orbits. The draw back to this system was that you could only get a navigation fix once an hour. In order for GPS to ever work they needed to have reliable accurate clocks in space. The US Navy once again stepped forward by launching the Timation satellite in 1967 which accomplished this. The first world wide ground, based radio navigation system became operational in the 1970's. It was known as The Omega Navigation System, but it was based on a single phase comparison.

Advancement

In early 1978 another experimental line of GPS satellites known as Block-I was launched, with ten more to follow that would be launched by 1985. Modern Block-II satellites were beginning to be launched by early 1989 to start to replace and enhance the Block-I system already in place. By December 1993 the finally attained operational capability and a complete constellation of 24 satellites were in place by January 1994. The oldest operational satellite in the system was launched in early 1989, with the newest satellite being launched in September of 2006.

After the Soviet shooting down of the Korean airliner KAL 007 in 1983, President Ronald Regan announced that the civilian population would have access for use to the GPS navigation system once it was completed.

During President Bill Clintons administration the government realized the importance of the GPS system to civilian users as well as the military. Clinton then created the Interagency GPS Executive Board to administer and over see the Global Positioning System. At this point GPS really became a dual-use system for both civilian and military use. In 1998 then Vice President Al Gore announced future plans for an upgrade to the GPS system to include two new signals for civilian use, in point for aviation use and safety, and to enhance the reliability and accuracy of the system. In 2004 with an updated national policy President George W. Bush announced that the Interagency GPS Executive Board would be replaced by the National Space- Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Executive Committee because of the importance of the GPS system to us in our everyday lives.

With the rapid advancement of technology in todays world there will be many changes in the GPS industry. We will find it more and more intertwine with our lives as more uses are developed for it.

Mitsubishi Eyes Russia As New Plant's Home

News from Russia's business and tourist capital, St. Petersburg, say that Japanese auto maker Mitsubishi has had some of its top executives visiting the mentioned location. Because of this, rumors have abound that this is perhaps because the company is set on building a new facility or assembly plant here.

This was in fact backed up and confirmed by one of the major Mitsubishi distributors in Russia. The distributor said that the company is indeed planning on building an assembly plant in St. Petersburg. Mitsubishi actually sent off a whole delegation of the company's officials to see the possibilities of setting the plan into action. This is according to Matt Donnelly who holds the rank as the president of Rolf, the exclusive distributor of Mitsubishi performance parts and Mitsubishi vehicles in Russia as well as in Kazakhstan. Donnelly even adds, “They came to see what is it that everybody is so excited about.” He even further adds that the whole trip was made so as to gain further information on the place as the future home of a Mitsubishi plant.

It could not be denied that St. Petersburg and the rest of Russia has been one of the major locations of manufacturing and assembly plants for various auto manufacturers. In fact, General Motors, Nissan, and Toyota are also building up their plans of having their plants set up in this area. Aside from this, the Ford Motor Company already has its own plant in the country since the year 2002 where Ford Focus models are being assembled.

As per the Mitsubishi delegation of officials, they were able to visit two possible locations for their plant. These two locations are found south of St. Petersburg. It even includes the area of Shushary which is the current site of plants for Japanese Toyota and American General Motors.

If this plan becomes reality, then sure enough, Mitsubishi would be able to produce more and more of their exemplary vehicles as well as their quality products. Aside from this, the company would sure be able to find time to create and design new vehicles for the various markets that it sells its wares to.

Great Technical Writing: The Two-Edged Sword of Reader Experience

Overview

When we write User Documents we rely on our Reader's/User's experience to simplify our work. This can cause problems for the Reader. This article will discuss the effects of Reader experience and how to minimize the negative effects of incompatible experience, and how to handle the writer's assumptions about the Reader.

Writer's Benefits: Relying on Reader Experience

When we write, we rely on our Reader's experience to give us a "starting point" for our User Document. Often we make hidden assumptions about our Reader's experience.

Here are some examples where relying on our Reader's experience makes things easy (and causes problems) for us as writers:

Example: Using a Computer's Mouse

In writing User Documentation for Graphical User Interface-based computer products (such as the Windows or Mac User interface), we assume that the the Reader knows how to use a mouse to click on items, drag, etc. This saves much background writing.

Example: Cooking: How to Measure Ingredients; Terms

Cook books save space by (usually correctly) assuming that a Reader can perform basic cooking operations (such as measuring ingredients), and terms (such as puree or slice).

Example: Common Acronyms

We rely on "common" acronyms such as AM and PM to simplify our writing lives. However, many Readers use a 24 hour clock, and thus AM and PM are meaningless to them.

Beware of any acronyms that you assume that your Reader knows. It is best to define acronyms in line (perhaps in parentheses) when they are first presented in that part of the User Document.

You cannot define them only the first time they appear in the User Document. This assumes -- incorrectly -- that Users read your User Document from start to finish.

Problems Writers Cause When Assuming User Experience

Our assumptions as writers can get us into trouble.

Example: Unfamiliar Words

Here's a gardening example: Acme's (a fictitious company) Illustrated Guide to Gardening in Canada (1979) makes an incorrect assumption about its Readers:

In one of their definitions they use a term, "the axil of a leaf" to define another term. "Axil of a leaf" is not listed in the books index, and there is no glossary in the book. Clearly this book assumes that the Reader understands the term "the axil of a leaf." I dont, and am therefore unhappy with the presentation.

Solution: Provide a glossary of gardening terms or a reference to a page in the book where the term is defined.

Example: Assuming Students' Experience

Here is an example where an (unstated) assumption by a training company rendered one of their courses useless.

In order to do the exercises in a computer programming course, students had to be able to use an editor (a simple word processor) to program the system. The only editor available on the course machines was a UNIX editor known as vi.

Unfortunately, the students were not told that they needed to use the vi editor. The course presenters assumed that the students knew vi. The students did not, and they spent half the course time trying to learn and deal with vi.

The hidden assumption by the training company resulted in a failed learning experience (the students never needed to use vi again). It wasted two days of the four-day course time.

Don't Present Assumptions in a Sneaky Way

If the training company had said that, "We train on UNIX systems," then they leave a way out for themselves when they disappoint students who do not know the vi editor. When confronted, the company could respond with, "We told you it was a UNIX system. You should know that vi is the editor available on that system."

This sneaky statement of the assumption is foolish. It will result in a lose-lose situation.

The Bottom Line

As writers, we to make assumptions about our Reader's experience. However, if you make assumptions, then make sure that you tell the Reader what you assume about him/her.

Think about the assumptions that you make about your Reader. Are these assumptions valid (that is, can you really expect your Readers to meet your assumptions)? If there is any doubt in your mind, include information explaining the terms and procedures that you assume.

Make sure that when you state assumptions, that you present them in a way that the Reader (student) can understand what the assumption means to them. Don't be sneaky about presenting the assumptions.

User Experience Can Cause Trouble for Writers

Your Reader's experience can cause confusion. Here are some examples:

Example: Shampoo/Conditioner Product

One of my favorite examples is a combined hair shampoo and conditioner product. If a User has experience with the separate products, then their experience is to:

* Shampoo: Wet thenhair. Massage shampoo into the hair, then rinse it out.
* Conditioner: Wash the hair. Massage conditioner into the wet hair, leave in the hair for two or three minutes, then rinse it out.

The problem arises with the combined product. Should the User leave the product in the hair for two or three minutes (as done with the conditioner), or rinse it immediately (as done with the shampoo)?

The User Document (product label) for a combined shampoo-conditioner should tell the User how to use the two-in-one product. Most such labels do not.

Example: Words Used in Unexpected Ways

Your writing can set the expectations of the Reader, resulting in confusion when words are used unexpectedly.

An article in the Technology Section (of a newspaper on June 10, 2004, page B14) described, "How the little guy can back up computer data". The article was about computers. When I came to the sentence: "Let's face it: backups are boring and a hassle to boot." I wondered about the phrase "to boot."

In computer jargon, "boot" is the process where the computer starts up ("lifts itself by its bootstraps"...by a program originally called a "bootstrap loader"). Does the author's quote about "hassle to boot" mean that if I do backups, then my computer will be slower ("boring") and require more work from me to start up ("hassle to boot")?

The use of the phrase "to boot" is inappropriate in this article, given that "to boot" has multiple meanings. The author used it as slang for "in addition to." Since the article was about computers, I thought of the computer meaning of "to boot." The sentence would be less confusing if the author left out "to boot," as: "Let's face it: backups are boring and a hassle." We'll return to this example shortly.

Example: Functional Fixedness

An object's function is fixed in a person's mind. For example, a hammer's function is to pound things. Experiments have demonstrated that people have a hard time using a hammer for an unusual function, such as a paperweight, a prop, or a lever. This is called functional fixedness.

Functional fixedness can limit the usefulness of your product. Your User Document should attempt to overcome functional fixedness. Perhaps this example will show how critical I am of User Documents.

I have a wrist global positioning satellite (GPS) device that keeps track of my long walks. Sweaters and heavy coats, needed for walking in the winter, make it difficult to wear the GPS device on the wrist. But it is a WRIST device. Functional fixedness arises, causing me struggle to use the GPS on my wrist. But it turns out that the GPS works well when used in a pocket.

The GPS User Document should mention this (obvious?) capability, thus reducing the functional fixedness associated with the WRIST GPS. In my defense: I am not sure that putting the wrist GPS in a pocket is more obvious than using a hammer as a paperweight.

Example: Humor

Humor relies on:

. a subtle knowledge of the language (for example a pun)
. or a knowledge of an event (perhaps a current event or entertainment event)

on which the humor is based. Here's an example, from an old joke:

"You're so funny, you should be on a stage. There's one leaving in 15 minutes."

This joke relies on the Reader's knowing the two meanings of "stage": (1) a place for performing, and (2) transportation used in the western United States in the 1800's. Most Readers might not know the second meaning, rendering the humor a confusing waste of words.

Earlier we examined the sentence: "Let's face it: backups are boring and a hassle to boot." The author used the phrase "to boot" as some form of folksy talk or humor. It confused the Reader.

Eliminate Humor from Your User Document

. Humor will only confuse Users who do not understand it.
. Humor is difficult, if not impossible, to translate into other languages.

I suggest that you use a writing style that is informal and conversational, but with no attempts at humor. Remove attempts at humor when you review and revise your writing.

If you want to write humor, do it elsewhere (you should be on a stage). User Documents are no place to practice your humor.

The Bottom Line

Assumptions

Be careful about what you assume about your Reader. When in doubt whether or not a Reader knows something:

. State your assumptions about your Reader
State the assumptions in a way that the Reader can relate to
. When in doubt, add the information that you assume, or
. Tell your Reader where to find the assumed information
By providing or pointing to this assumed information, you increase your audience

Readers' Experience

Be aware of how your Reader's experience influences how he/she interprets your User Document or uses your product. If necessary add material to your User Document to counter your Reader's incompatible experience.
